Red Lion Wah Wah Pedal Upgrade
Articles - Gear Mods
Monday, 23 July 2007 01:58

Roger Mayer is the guy who has made guitar effects pedals for some of classic rock's legends. Mayer began making guitar effects in 1964 for Jimmy Page (of Led Zeplin). He went on to make effects for other rock gods like Jeff Beck, Big Jim Sullivan, and Jimi Hendrix. With a resume like this, you know you are in for a real treat with his Roger Mayer Red Lion Wah pedal upgrade kit.

Red Lion Wah Circuit

The Roger Mayer Red Lion Wah upgrade kit is the latest in Roger Mayer's range of wah kits and has been expressly designed to retro fit into a standard Dunlop Crybaby wah housing without any soldering. It features continuous variable wah tuning over a wide range that will enable players to easily find their own sweet wah sound very quickly. It is based on Roger Mayer's very successful 9090A wah kit and of course the wah sweeps have their roots based on the mods Roger did for Jimi's wahs so now you can tune into those wah sounds you have already heard with ultimate ease.

The wah mod should fit into a pedal like this:

Dunlop Original Crybaby Wah Pedal

Only top quality components and magnetics are used and the circuit is very quiet in operation. The flexibility of this replacement card and the performance gained by the incorporation of over 33 years of wah modifications are brought to a head in this card. There are a lot of standard wah pedals without a tuning option and the Red Lion Wah brings this option to players at a very affordable price. Technically the card has a high input impedance low capacitance input circuit which means there is no tone sucking or level loss in bypass mode and there is no need to further modify the standard wiring harness with a DPDT switch as there is no performance to be gained.

The card was named after the Red Lion Pub in Barnes near to Olympic Studios where Jimi and Roger recorded and this establishment certainly provided a great watering hole and escape from the studio. The vibes of this place sparked many great ideas and songs..

There is also a Band of Gypsies version of this wah pedal mod. The Band of Gypsies Red Lion has a smoother, warmer high frequency voice with more emphases on the upper mid range tones, and patterns a wah effect Roger built for Jimi to use during the BOG tour and album. A novice guitarist that plays at home or in small rooms may find the standard Red Lion a bit harsh in that environment. So Roger reproduced the BOG tones to help smooth the sound of that "experience".

Installing the wah pedal mod is pretty easy. All it takes is a screwdriver and a nut driver or adjustable wrench. The mod comes with instructions, so don't worry. If you search the internet you will see that the mod gets awesome reviews.  The mod is highly recommended for anyone wanting to improve their Wah pedal sound.

You can find more info and sound sample sover on Roger's site .
