Billy Duffy is a hard rock and alternative rock guitarist best known for being a member of post punk band The Cult. His fusion of punk and rock riffs had a dark, mystic vibe. In the mid-2000s, he formed a new band called Circus Diablo.

Let's look at some of the gear and equipment that has been seen in Billy's guitar rig.

Don't know for sure, but he's had it as early as 1988/89. It's been featured in promo photography supporting the Sonic Temple album. I would bet it's a 70s era Les Paul Custom that was originally black, and was stripped clear at the top. It is a really cool look, and I think it was inspired by a similar guitar owned by Mick Ronson. I believe all of Billy's guitars sport Duncans.

He's changed rig a bit since this was written. He now uses the Matchless DC-30 along side the trusted Roland JC120. He no longer uses Badcat amps. He's also added a sweet Fender Telecaster to his guitar lineup. Black and road-worn. Definitely using outboard distortion, very likely both overdrive pedals listed above, each for different degrees/qualities of tone.

What about the Matchless head? Saw him Saturday night and the only Marshalls on stage were rhythm guitar. Is he running outboard distortion? Just an incredible sound the other night!!!!

Thanks,
Scott
