Only one effect. Either of the following: an Ibanez TS808, an Ibanez TS9 modified to TS808 (about a couple of resistors and caps worth of difference, some companies sell "kits", see for example www.banzaimusic.com/.../), a Maxon OD808, or a BYOC Overdrive 2.

BUT, I think it's important that 1. the instrument connected is a good Telecaster guitar, and failing that, a good Stratocaster, and 2. the amp is a tube Fendery Tweed type amp (like a Fender 57 Champ Reissue, or a Victoria 518/5112, or a Fender Deluxe Reissue, Fender Bassman, etc.).

He's been using a double-cut Gibson Les Paul Junior a lot ever since the avocado album, but back then mostly live. On Backspacer, most of his tracks were done with a Les Paul Junior. It's probably a vintage '58-'59 Les Paul Junior, judging by the tortoise-shell pickguard - the newer ones, including the Historic Custom Shop line, use a plain, single-ply, black plastic pickguard.

At one point I was curious if the pickup is original or something more hi-fi (like a Jason Lollar P90) and I've contacted the fan club people, who were kind enough to answer that the uses the stock Gibson P90 pickup.

Hope this helps.

+6 #1 Mike McCready\'s TS9 is not stockRazvan Cojocaru 2009-05-05 21:57
It should be noted that Mike McCready's Ibanez TS9 pedal has been modified by Robert Keeley (with the TS9 "mod plus") - basically it's been converted to a TS808 with more distortion available and a Texas Instruments RC4558P op-amp chip.

So for all of you guitarists buying stock Ibanez TS9 pedals and expecting to get Mike McCready's tone, you're better off with a stock TS808 pedal. Either that, or modify your pedal to Keeley specs.
