For being a blues guy he sure uses a whole bunch of effects to try and get the sound the old blues guys use to get with a fraction of this gear.

He uses an amp overdriven with an overdrive pedal on top of that and a cocked wah pedal. you can add reverb or delay if you want. he might possibly also use an octave effect.

Just a bit more about the black relic strat in the photo on this page....in April 2010 Guitarist issue he says he went to fenders custom shop and did a lot of the work on the guitar himself, as he wanted to help make his own guitar. It was then reliced by john cruz and sent to john mayer

Yes, John does own one of those. In 2003, Rene Martinez (SRV's tech)worked with Charley's to reproduce 23 of these guitars. Not coincidentally, Rene is also John's tech and he ended up with one. Santana and Kenny Wayne Sheopard also reportedly own one.

You can also get that tone from Belief if you switch the pickups to the 2,3, & 4 positions (more-so on a strat) and turn the tone nob down...the middle position seems to work good for H-H configuration.

right on!!...at times, mayer can have one of the most (tastefully) "worked" tones with several effects but the thing to keep in mind for 'his' tone is--> pickups on his signature and/or relic strat(lower output/mid-scoop), keeley blues driver, keeley katana clean boost, ts808/ts9, and CERTAINLY his custom two-rock rig(substantial mid boost)

0 #50 JM\'s tuningBluesderek 2009-08-09 06:57
Most of his live DVD is in standard tuning. For a couple of songs with the trio he uses a sunburst hardtail strat with a large CBS style headstock that is tuned down a halfstep to Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, and Eb. He might use a dropped D tuning (standard, but low E tuned down a whole step to D) every once in a while, but I'm not quite sure

Although Mayer does own and use the "Steel String Singer" he is also an avid user of the Overdrive Special. He bought the S.S.S within the past couple years. If you know anything about Dumble amps, the S.S.S. is VERY rare (Dumble only built that amp for players he highly liked)
Until he could get his hands on a S.S.S. he used a ODS. WHich is a great amp!!! Santana loves them.

he uses one of the effects off the adrenalinn pedal for that sweet buttery wah sound in this song. you can mimick the effect using a wah wah pedal but it wont exactly be the same. For added info as most already know, john uses the adrenalinn pedal for Bigger than my body also. except he uses the random arpeggiator effect available in the adrenallin pedal

your post is old on here so you probably figured it out by now, however i figured i would shoot you an e mail anyway answering your question. The effect used is an octave up pedal. they come in forms such as Fender Blender pedal, Catalinbread ottava magus (prob not correct spelling. there are tons of other popular brand name pedals that do this effect. but yes it is an octave up pedal. not to be confused with a standard octave pedal.

+3 #35 Belief solo toneryaan 2008-12-27 19:33
Ok so I always wondered how he got that high pitch tone at the end of belief.

I thought it was a wah pedal all the way back with distortion but a friend of mine came over with this peavey vyper amp and it has this one effect called mog... I've been playing guitar 16 years and play prof so I can play. I play the solo exactly the way he did in where the light is and got the chills. It's the exact same sound he uses to the T. I'm still trying to find out what mog is supposed to be. Sounds like a synth effect. If anyone know what the effect stands for please share.

0 #27 High pitched tone....Harmonics???Zach 2008-10-05 10:31
No Erik, the high pitch tone is from an octavia pedal. Used by Jimi Hendrix in most of his solos like the one in Machine gun where he also used a uni-vibe pedal. John mayer is very good, but no one plays a full harmonic solo, that would sound horrible.
Quote

-7 #26 High Pitched Toneerik 2008-09-19 08:31
Someone earlier asked how John got that high pitched tone on the solo in Belief over the DRH section. I'm quite positive its not an effect. They are all pinch harmonics. He just has such control over his guitar that he can play a full solo, every note of which is a pinch harmonic. He's a better player than even the people who like him give him credit for.

-1 #18 Tampa Bryan 2008-07-29 12:57
i think quite a bit of the compression is coming straight out of two-rock. I've heard samples of them and the seem to have a very fluffy sounding tone, which coupled with a TS-808 would prolly come across as sounding extremely compressed. just my guess so dont quote me on that.
Quote

-1 #17 R 2008-07-25 07:39
I have seen him playing some songs (eg. vultures, i think it was AOL sessions) on youtube with a plec before, and tbh he sounded less john-mayerey than the same songs with fingers.

Most of the time he plays fingerstyle on electric.

-2 #16 bluesderek 2008-07-17 10:14
I think it is some kind of octaver, maybe the Fulltone Octafuzz or the Voodoo Lab Proctavia, but I wouldn't know for sure. Unfortunately he keeps his stomp boxes in a drawer of his rack

Also, I was surprised not to find any kind of compressor in this list of gear as all of his sounds seem to be heavily compressed (sometimes too much so, for my taste)

I had wondered about this myself; after watching some live videos and listening to a few solo tracks I'd say he actually goes fingerstyle or pick/finger hybrid most of the time, which is [one of the ways, anyway] how he gets that big, warm sound out of a Strat on Gravity, I Don't Trust Myself, etc.
